McQueen was a considerable talent, a 'normal' lad that through talent and hard work became one of the most iconic designers of the beginning of the 21st century. His success is mostly down to his talent, authenticity and hard work. Show after the show were massive hits, and his ability was irrefutable. Devastatingly McQueen felt immense pressure to fulfil the reputation of his work as one of the world's leading designers, show after show, year after year. After McQueen sadly took his life in 2010 his psychiatrist, Dr Stephen Pereira, said the designer saw his work as a "double-edged sword". "He felt it was the only area of his life where he thought he had achieved something."
This blog post is written in Ellie's own words and dedicated to Lee 'Alexander' McQueen.
I will now pass you over to Ellie.
Alexander McQueen is a fashion legend who flew the flag for bold, authentic and raw fashion design. He was one of the youngest designers to achieve the title “British designer of the year” which he then went on to win four times within the next seven years (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003). These awards highlighted how talented McQueen was. McQueen was found to be very influential as each collection he launched told a story. It told a story of McQueen and what he had been through previously in his life; this, therefore, showed what kind of person he was. People were naturally drawn to Alexander McQueen and his unusual take on fashion, building a loyal following of celebrities and investors.
Each fashion show was authentic and unique as he related the name of the show to the actual collection itself. I believe that each time McQueen released a collection, there was always something different about it. Every time he showed off his new work, the designs became more and more extravagant. His daring designs attracted people to the dark qualities and the grotesque elements of the product. McQueen would be very creative when designing and creating as he could find anything lying around and would be able to create something based off of that one object.
For me, this is my favourite piece that Alexander McQueen has done as I like the different aspects of the dress. I think it is quite different and authentic as it has a mix between lace pleated tartan and a tulle material underneath, which is an exciting combination of materials. I think Alexander McQueen’s authenticity is relevant today because his design demonstrated that people could be different. Being different is a huge factor in our world today because of human judgement.
“Fashion should be a form of escapism and not a form of imprisonment” - Alexander McQueen
McQueen showed how different his collections were as his designs are so different from other designers clothing lines.
McQueen's designs are more prominent and bolder and have these little details which make the dresses stand out.
Whereas designers like Elie Saad and Zuhair Murad have a more feminine feel, less jarring and dramatic. Their designs are more sleek and elegant.
“I design what I want to wear, and it works that way” -Alexander McQueen
